Startup Ecosystems

I visit Karlsruhe once or twice a month and really enjoy meeting friends and talking about how things are going. What happens very often, though, is that people complain that the Karlsruhe startup scene isn't as great/big as Berlin, for example.
Today, I had the pleasure to meet several friends who are working on startups themselves, and go to the weekly PionierGarage meeting. And it felt like there are so many hardworking, intelligent and positive people in such a small area, that it doesn't really matter which "ecosystem" you're in, but rather who is around you. Of course it's great to have a loose network of people who can introduce you to everyone. However, at the beginning of a startup it feels like it's even more important to be part of a tight group of people who really motivate each other.
